October Thing-a-day, Day 3: Intersection (self portrait)

Intersection
More experimentation with slow shutter speeds. The scene was exposed for 1.3 seconds, with me standing still during the process. I used a remote to fire the shot. The photo turned out ok, but it isn’t as interesting as I had hoped for. I think part of the issue is that I am too bright compared to everyone else- to solve this, I could walk for part of the exposure and then stop in place.

October Thing-a-day, Day 2: Minifig action

Star wars!
Here is another shot for my motion assignment. For lighting, I used an incandescent desk lamp through a few sheets of tissue paper, with a black light to highlight the light saber. To make the motion smoother, the minifig’s arm was loosened by rubbing down the plastic with sandpaper and then coating it with oil. A piece of thread was clamped between the figure’s hand and saber to give something to hold onto. Photo of the setup is here.

October Thing-a-day, Day 1: Association of Monocled Cat Walkers

Today’s thing is a logo for a group I would like to start. Anyone interested?

This was drawn in pencil, inked with a sharpie, then scanned, thresholded in GIMP, and converted to a vector drawing and simplified in Inkscape.

October Thing-a-day, Day 0: One-handed Super Mario Bros Theme

So, for part of a project I am working on, I have been teaching myself some of the music from Super Mario Brothers. I know most of the notes now (at least for the first hand, the second will come next), so now I need to focus on remembering them quicker and little details like tempo and stuff. Sheet music from here.

October Thing-a-day, Day -1: Bed Racers print

This is a test print for my “motion and time” assignment. I really enjoy this technique- the trick is to use a low shutter speed (1/30 in this case), and pan the camera to follow the subject along the frame. I found it best to start following them, press the shutter while continuing to pan, and following through with the motion until after the shutter closes. I also recommend practicing on a digital camera before dropping too much film on this technique. Note that this isn’t a great example of the technique, but it is the best I have captured on film so far.

October Thing-a-day, Day -2: Pumpkin Pie

About a week ago, I felt this strong urge to make a pumpkin pie from scratch. It ended up turning into two pies because, of an abundance of filling. To ensure that it met the highest quality standards, I submitted it to a strict jury for scrutiny, who, upon receipt of the pastry, approved of it as an acceptable form of dessert.

Thing-a-day, October!

I very much enjoyed participating in the thing-a-day project in February, and it was a great way to get motivated about completing projects that I wanted to do. Unfortunately, I have become pretty lax about updating since then, so in an effort to correct this, I am doing a personal thing-a-day project right here, for the month of October. This time around though, I’m not promising to make an electronic wonder a day. A simple baked good or drawing will count, as well as projects for my photography class (since I am taking the class for personal reasons anyway). I have a few projects from the last few days to start out with!
