October Thing-a-day, Day 17: Monster lamp

Todays project uses both sides of a lampshade to make an image that changes when you turn the light on. Spooky! Move your mouse over the image to see what happens!


Note: If you don’t see a change, the second image is here. Also, please let me know- I’d like to hear if this isn’t a good solution for rollover images.

October Thing-a-day, Day 16: Phoenix DIY Meeting

We had our 9th meeting on October 28th. Both presenters gave excellent talks, and I had a great time. Unfortunately, I forgot to bring my camera so I don’t have any pictures.

It counts as a thing-a-day because I helped organize it and brought the snacks :-D.

Upcoming things in the Phoenix area

Looking for cool things to do out here? Here are some events that shouldn’t be missed:
* Oct. 29th: Ignite Phoenix (that’s tonight!): 19 presenters are given 5 minutes each to give lightning talks about something they feel strongly about. I went to the last one and it was a blast! Event Details
* Nov. 9th: All Souls Procession in Tucson: They will have activities all weekend, however the main Parade will take place on Sunday at 6PM. Event Details
* Nov. 12th, 15th: 999 Eyes Freakshow: The ‘last genuine traveling freakshow in the United States’ will be visiting Arizona this month, and stopping in Phoenix on the 12th, Flagstaff on the 13th, and Tucson on the 15th. I met some of the members at Maker Faire and they got me pretty excited about the show. Event Details
* Nov. 15th: Conspire Anniversary Block Party: Conspire, a cool art collective downtown, is celebrating their 1 year anniversary by throwing a party! Event details

October Thing-a-day, Day 14: Assembling an Arduino Clone

I spent most of the day recovering from a cold, but managed to get this board assembled and tested today.

This is the Bare Bones Board from Modern Devices.

To make a stop motion video from a set of images: (Make a backup of them first!)

mogrify -resize 640x480 *.JPG
mencoder -ovc lavc -mf w=640:h=480:fps=20:type=jpg 'mf://*.JPG' -o time_lapse-test.flv

Note: If the frames also need to be rotated, run them through mogrify with the -rotate option first. I had to do this twice before it had an effect, presumably because the rotate flag was set in the jpeg headers.
